"women in the Bible"...

The young girls Sunday morning Bible class is currently doing a series on  "women in the Bible". We have chosen some women to study... not only their Biblical story, but the customs and cultures and even foods from their "times". This is a very interesting series and very exciting! So far we have studied Sarah, wife of Abraham, and how she lived in tents her entire life and how she showed hospitality to strangers....a good example to us today. The girls made a tent, similiar to what Sarah probably lived in....learned how humble that style of living was. This last Sunday we studied the story of Rachel, Leah, and Jacob. We held two Jewish weddings to show the historic rituals and customs. For instance, the brides wore red! We learned about the brides preparations, the wedding, the feast after and about all the celebrating connected to a wedding!! We had fig cakes(fig newtons), bread and oil with spices, and sparkling red grape juice (red wine), which was typical foods during a wedding feast. We, most importantly, learned how the brides veil was not "see through" like our veils today....but was thick and unable to see through. The bride covered her face entirely. This explains how Jacob didn't realize he had married Leah instead of Rachel....the veil of the bride was not removed or lifted until after the "honeymoon" period! The girls are enjoying learning all about the women and their customs....and especially learning from the examples of these special women in God's word.
